While House of the Dragon is already presenting some interesting relationships, there are plenty of Game of Thrones ships that fans have not forgotten about. With such a massive ensemble of characters, there are so many potential relationships that fans have rooted for over the course of the series.
The website Ao3 is home to fanfic from many different fandoms and franchises with more than 53,000 dedicated to Game of Thrones. From relationships established on the show to ones imagined by fans, these are the most popular ships from Game of Thrones.
10 Lyanna Stark & Rhaegar Targaryen
Though fans only got the briefest glimpse at this romance in the show, its impact is undeniable. The history of Robert’s Rebellion suggested that it began because Rhaegar Targaryen kidnaped Lyanna Stark, but the reality is that they loved each other and she ran away with him.
Along with being the truth behind Jon Snow’s parentage, their romance literally started a war and it is hard not to get swept up in that idea. With so little known about their time together, fans get to explore their forbidden love in some interesting ways.
9 Theon Greyjoy & Robb Stark
It is interesting how one of the greatest betrayals against the Starks on Game of Thrones can also provide inspiration for one of the most popular ships. Theon Greyjoy would go on to choose his family over Robb and attack Winterfell, but many fans seemed to latch on to the relationship they once had.
Robb and Theon grew up in Winterfell together and they shared a tight bond. They would sometimes bicker and annoy each other, but they also trusted each other more than anyone else. Perhaps these fan-fiction stories are a way to imagine what might have been had Theon stayed loyal to Robb.
8 Sansa Stark & Margaery Tyrell
When Sansa Stark was a captive of the Lannisters in Kings Landing, she was surrounded by enemies. However, one unexpected friend emerged with Margaery Tyrell. Though Margaery had her own ambitions, she offered kindness and understanding to Sansa when she needed it most.
Given how badly fans felt for Sansa at this time, it is not surprising that Margaery’s kindness struck a chord with them. As they both had to deal with Joffrey as a love interest, it’s hard to deny they would both be happier with each other.
7 Cersei Lannister & Jaime Lannister
As one of the central romances in Game of Thrones, it is predictable that Cersei and Jaime Lannister would hold some fascination for fans. It is also likely that the twisted nature of their relationship added some fun to these fan-fiction stories.
On the one hand, Cersei and Jaime clearly love each other and eventually embrace that love despite how wrong it is to everyone else around them. But it is also hard to deny that they made each other worse when they were together and that toxic quality made the relationship so compelling.
6 Catelyn Stark & Ned Stark
The marriage between Catelyn and Ned Stark is perhaps the most wholesome relationship on the show. Despite Catelyn thinking that Ned had a son with another woman, they love each other deeply and want nothing more than to stay together.
While the show tragically pulls them apart, perhaps fans enjoy exploring the love Catelyn and Ned shared in a way the show never got to. From their earlier days together to imagining a world in which Catelyn knows the truth about Jon’s parents, fans can imagine the happier times between these two.
5 Sandor Clegane & Sansa Stark
There was never any explicit relationship between Sandor “The Hound” Clegane and Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones and many fans were happy for that. Given her young age when they met and his intimidating nature, their scenes together always carried an unsettling feeling.
However, there is clearly some connection these characters share and that might be what fans are drawn to with their shipping. With The Hound as Sansa’s trusted knight and protector, their relationship becomes a lot easier to take.
4 Jon Snow & Daenerys Targaryen
Though it only really began in the final season of the show, the romance between Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen was perhaps the most important one in the series. There are some fans who felt that it contributed to a lot of the problems with the final season, but there are a lot of interesting aspects of this relationship.
Bringing the two main characters of the series together with them both having gone through incredible journeys together is certainly exciting. And the truth about Jon adds some riveting drama to the romance.
3 Gendry & Arya Stark
Very shortly after met in season 1, fans immediately began shipping the relationship between Arya and Gendry. There was a playful dislike at first, but it was clear a bond was forming. Their adventures together further cemented that bond and it began to feel like something more than a friendship.
After years of waiting, Arya and Gendry finally reunited in the show’s final season. Though many fans were disappointed when Arya turned down Gendry’s marriage proposal, they can now imagine all the adventures these two could have gone on together.
2 Jon Snow & Sansa Stark
Though Sansa Stark and Jon Snow are not really brother and sister, they are still related by blood. In that sense, it is a little strange that so many fans seem to be rooting for this romance between such an inappropriate TV romance with such important characters.
Regardless of the reason for the popularity, Jon and Sansa do make a memorable pair. They shared one of the best reunions on Game of Thrones and shared a combative yet respectful partnership overseeing Winterfell. Their chemistry is strong even if a romance between them feels off-putting.
1 Jaime Lannister & Brienne Of Tarth
As compelling as Jaime and Cersei’s relationship was, many fans were always hoping he would eventually choose Brienne instead. This is another relationship that starts out rocky but grows into something special over time.
They are very different people, but they see something in each other that they respect and admire. The moment of Jaime knighting Brienne thrilled so many fans and it wouldn’t be surprising if that served as an inspiration for many of these ships.
