Cynthia Erivo, who plays the Blue Fairy in the Disney+ live-action remake of Pinocchio, took to the stage during the D23 “Studio Showcase, Day 1: Celebrate the Magic of Disney and Pixar” panel to perform “When You Wish Upon a Star,” the song most closely associated with the iconic character.

The panel, which took place in Hall D23 from 3:30 to 5:30 PM on Friday, September 9th, 2022, spotlights the Disney magic in store for viewers in theaters and at home on Disney+.

Pinocchio is a live action and CGI remake of the 1940 animated Disney classic directed by Robert Zemeckis. It’s the latest live action and CGI remake of a classic Disney animated musical to be release, following movies like Cinderella, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin.

Pinocchio reunites Forrest Gump director Zemeckis with that movie’s star, Tom Hanks, who plays the toymaker Geppetoo. It stars Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as the eponymous puppet, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket, and Erivo as the Blue Fairy, the character responsible to granting puppet Pinocchio’s wish to be a real boy.

The cast of the movie also includes Keegan-Michael Key as “Honest” John, Luke Evans as The Coachman, and Lorraine Bracco as Sofia the Seagull, a newly introduced character. In addition, Giuseppe Battiston plays Stromboli, Lewin Lloyd plays Lampwick, Jaquita Ta’le plays Sabina, and Kyanne Lamaya plays Fabiana.

Three New Songs in Pinocchio

Ervio’s performance of “When You Wish Upon a Star” at D23 underscores the fact that the song is one of three compositions from the original musical to be included in the remake. The other two are “Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee,” which is performed by Key as Honest John, and “I’ve Got No Strings,” performed by Ainsworth as Pinocchio along with a chorus of marionettes.

Ervio’s other performances include appearances Needle in a Timestack, The Outsider, and Bad Times at the El Royale. Her upcoming projects include the big-screen two-part adaptation of Wicked, which will also star Ariana Grande.

Pinocchio is currently available for streaming on Disney+, having been released on September 8th, 2022, the second annual Disney+ Day. Other titles released include Thor: Love and Thunder and a short cartoon starring Lisa Simpson and several familiar Disney villains called The Simpsons: Welcome to the Club. Additional releases include BTS: Permission to Dance: Onstance – LA and the latest episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, “Is This Not Real Magic?”
