Inside Out 2 is officially in the works, as the sequel was announced during Friday’s Pixar panel at the D23 expo. The movie comes seven years after the original Inside Out, a smash hit with audiences and the box office. The initial film received an Academy Award win and a nomination for Best Animated Feature Film and Best Writing on an Original Screenplay, respectively. In addition, Inside Out brought in an astounding $858 million at the box office.

Similar to the first, Inside Out 2 will follow an all-new adventure inside the head of Riley, played by Kaitlyn Dias. The film will see Riley as a teenager, with new emotions introduced throughout the movie. Meg LeFauve will return to write the screenplay, with Kelsey Mann stepping in to direct. Although Mann’s directing credits are slim, she does have experience with animation and Pixar. The filmmaker wrote the story for The Good Dinosaur and served as a story supervisor for Monsters University and Onward. Of course, the loss of Pete Doctor at the helm will be significant for the sequel, as he’s responsible for projects such as Up and Soul, with writing credits on the Toy Story franchise and Monsters Inc.

Inside Out was led by Amy Poehler, with Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling, Phyllis Smith, Richard Kind, Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan, and Paula Poundstone joining her. Further plot and cast details for Inside Out 2 are still unknown, as Disney kept the presentation at D23 relatively short. However, fans can expect to see the highly anticipated sequel arrive in theaters sometime in 2024.

Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling May Be Out of the Sequel

Despite the enormous success of the first film, Inside Out 2 may feature a few notable absences. Bill Hader was Fear in the first film, with Mindy Kaling in the role of Disgust. Although nothing is confirmed, a report from Matthew Belloni in a Puck newsletter began to stir rumors of the star’s departure from the film.

According to the report, Hader and Kaling were offered substantially less money compared to Amy Poehler, with the lead receiving a $5 million payday while the co-stars earned $100,000 each. Belloni says the penny-pinching seems to be a common trend for Pixar, and a deal couldn’t be reached between the actors despite renegotiation talks. Whatever the case, Inside Out 2 will undoubtedly feel the loss of two of its more prominent stars. No official word has been made on the cast for the sequel, so check back to find out more information about Pixar’s upcoming film.
