During Disney’s Epic Entertainment Showcase: The Musical: The Extravaganza! panel in Hall D23 on Saturday, September 10, 2022, at the Anaheim Convention Center, the cast of the new Disney+ series American Born Chinese, the genre-hopping action-comedy based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang from Disney Branded Television and produced by 20th Television, appeared to give Disney fans a sneak peek at the Disney+ series.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton introduced the clip, saying:

Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel is a beloved, important work of literature for a whole generation of readers. When they approached me about adapting it, I knew that it was going to be a huge challenge, but I also knew that it was a story that deserved to be told. Luckily, I didn’t have to do it alone. Building a creative family was definitely a huge part of why I was excited to be a part of this series. Everyone who worked on this show brought their unique talents along with a lot of personal experiences that we all drew from, which made the experience very special for all of us. As a bonus, I also got to bring along a lot of my friends from Shang-Chi.

American Born Chinese features a talented international cast, including Michelle Yeoh (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Ben Wang (MacGyver), two-time International Emmy Award nominee Yeo Yann Yann (Wet Season), Chin Han (Mortal Kombat), Daniel Wu (Reminiscence), Ke Huy Quan (Finding Ohana), former Taekwondo champion Jim Liu and Sydney Taylor (Just Add Magic). The Monkey King Is a Famous Character in Chinese Culture

The story of American Born Chinese follows the life of a high school teenager Jin Wang, who wants to be a regular kid doing regular things. But when a new student comes to town, he is suddenly thrown into the mythological world of gods, demons and epic dangers. And that mythological world involves heroes like the Monkey King. “For those of you who don’t know, the Monkey King is the most famous character in all of Chinese culture,” said Donnie Yen, who plays the role in the upcoming series. “He comes from a 500-year-old textbook Journey to the West, but he constantly pops up in modern-day movies, comic books, and video games.”

The American Born Chinese creative team added that any adaptation of the graphic novel “would not be complete without addressing important issues, so without giving too much away, I will just say that my character does not shy away from those uncomfortable moments.”
