It seems that James Gunn is getting tired of being surrounded by jokes about “invisible” characters. Having spend a number of years now bringing many humorous moments to both the MCU and the DCEU, it seems that continuous references to one joke about Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Drax in particular has been pushed beyond anything Gunn ever expected.
The one line that started it all was spoken by Drax when he said, “I’ve mastered the ability of standing so incredibly still that I become invisible to the eye.” While that humorous moment, which is emphasized by his fellow Guardians pointing out that they can still see him, could have simply passed into obscurity, instead it took on a life of its own. While images of “invisible” Drax have been enough on their own to drive Gunn crazy, since he began working with John Cena on The Suicide Squad and its spin-off, whose WWE entrance included the line “You can’t see me, my time is now”, they have become almost unbearable. Gunn responded to a tweet about Drax saying:
“Between the daily barrage of repetitive invisible jokes about John Cena in addition [to] the ones about Dave [Bautista], I almost regret making the joke in the first place.”
What makes it more tragic, is that the line that started the joke was not part of one of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, but instead came from Avengers: Infinity War. However, Gunn was fully responsible for the line of dialogue, which he provided to keep character continuity, which he would do again for movies such as Thor: Love and Thunder.
James Gunn’s Association With John Cena Doubled Down On The Drax Joke
The internet doesn’t take long to pick up on certain things, and Drax memes were pretty much instant, with images featuring the character superimposed on them turning up in relation to news stories, other movies and pop culture. However, when James Gunn worked on The Suicide Squad with John Cena, the association immediately became another part of the Drax joke.
While Gunn may not be exactly enthusiastic for the life of its own the joke has taken on, it is doubtful that he would trade away any of his time working on either Marvel or DC projects to be free of the burden of the effect that one line on social media. Having already had a good run with Marvel Studios, Gunn seems to be having the time of his life working with Warner Bros. Discovery on projects like The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.
Recently, the writer/director suggested that the second season of Peacemaker is almost ready to start filming, which would put it on course to arrive on HBO Max sometime in early 2023. In addition to this, Gunn has also dropped a huge hint that he could be soon working with Margot Robbie again on a Harley Quinn project, which fans have been hoping would happen at some point. For now, fans can catch up on the Guardians of the Galaxy on Disney+ ahead of their Holiday Special latest this year, and on The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker season 1 on HBO Max.
